This is not an axe

Now that we’re officially ‘country bumpkins’ down here in West Sussex, we’ve allowed ourselves the luxury of using the open fireplaces at Chateau Sutton. In fact, during the extra-cold temperatures last week, it felt like more of a necessity than a luxury.

This means we need firewood. So I’ve bought myself a new toy, which is the thing pictured above. And no, it’s not an axe. It’s called a ‘maul’. A maul is thicker, blunter and heavier than a wood-chopping axe. It’s designed for splitting logs along the grain, to make firewood. By contrast, an axe is lighter, thinner and sharper, and is for chopping across the grain. If you want a more detailed description of the differences, click here.

The moral of the story is, of course, get the right tool for the job. Even if you’re doing it for fun.
