Intercompany Agreements

8 May 2014

We are delighted to feature an interview with Justin Walton, which he kindly gave when he was Head of Tax at John Laing plc. Justin is now the founder of PLS, which provides outsourced tax leadership services to businesses needing regular access to a Head of Tax or Tax Director but without one in their business. Justin’s contact details are set out at the end of this article.

Why did you get into tax?

Like many of my peers, by accident. I joined the Institute of Taxation A level programme at Stoy Hayward (now BDO), having been given the choice between a tax or insolvency route.

Who has been the most influential role model for your professional life?

The partners at KPMG that encouraged me into the PPP sector - I have now been working in infrastructure for 15 years and enjoy the variety it gives a tax advisor.

What do you see as the biggest trend affecting the tax world over the next 10 years?

Watching BEPS play out together with increasing compliance and regulation.

What is your pet hate when dealing with advisers?

I like advisors that properly manage their WIP and fees and don't spring surprises.

In a movie of your life story, which actor or actress would you like to play you?

My favourites are De Niro and Pacino so one of them.

What would be your dream job if you didn’t work in tax?

Something in music or squash.

What did you have for breakfast?

A healthy start!

What do you do to relax?

Playing and watching squash, watching QPR, music, travelling and family time.

What is your favourite holiday destination?

La Manga Club in Spain.

What piece of advice would you give your 16-year-old self?

Pass your A levels, take opportunities, follow your instinct and listen to advice from friends and family but make your own decisions.

Justin Walton can be contacted via the website of PLS, by email at info@plstax.co.uk, or by telephone on +44 203 7419574 or on +44 7748 181494.
