On 17th March 2016, LCN Legal hosted a private seminar on structures available for private individuals and family offices to invest in UK property development projects. The event was by invitation only, and was held at the Ritz Hotel, London.
Our 24 guests included a number of property developers, Chinese investors and family offices. The organisations represented included ABP London, Aston Currency Management, CBH Europe Limited, Chase New Homes, China Mobile International, David Tang & Co, Doyen Group, Eco-Res Limited, HengStone Development, HSBC, MAW Properties London, Menzies LLP, Millbank Group, NICG Group, 020 Property Ltd, Vantage Properties and Management Ltd and Wellesley Finance Plc.
The session was hosted by Paul and Xiaofang Sutton, co-founders of LCN Legal, with assistance from Tudor Roberts, Leiza Bladd-Symms and other members of the LCN Legal team.
The seminar was arranged in four main themes:
- An introduction to the UK financial services regulatory issues which developers and introducers need to be aware of, when promoting opportunities to invest.
- An overview of the key tax issues for developers and for overseas investors (kindly presented by Stephen Hemmings, tax partner at Menzies LLP).
- A discussion of the advantages and disadvantages of three of the legal structures most commonly used to allow private investors to invest in development projects.
- A lender’s perspective on financing property development, lead by Alaistair Caie, Director of Wellesley Finance Plc.
